TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:

Hi! I’m Jan Maruska. I am the mom to 3 grown boys: Mike, Tim & Andy. They are each married to a wonderful woman and have blessed me with 8 grandchildren. I teach water aerobics at the Y. I also enjoy quilting, reading, walking, biking & cooking.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN AT DESERT SPRINGS & HOW DID IT BECOME HOME TO YOU?

I came to DSCC when I moved from Minnesota in 2009. I tried several churches, but once I attended DSCC I never left.

WHERE ARE YOU SERVING AT DSCC?

I am a table leader on Tuesday mornings. I am also a deacon and a facilitator for God’s Gal Sunday school class. In the past, I have participated in dinner theater and as a greeter.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE VERSE & WHY?

Proverbs 31:30 “Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” This verse always reminds me of what is important in my life and where my priorities lie.

If you see JAN around, be sure to say “Hi!”

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:

I am a nearly life-long believer, now retired.  Earlier I was a psychologist involved in research and teaching at Stanford University’s School of Medicine.  For many years, too, I was the training director, continuing education teacher and care giver for Stephen Ministry in my home church in Los Altos, CA.  I have two grown boys and four grandkids, spread out in middle and western USA.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN AT DESERT SPRINGS & HOW DID IT BECOME HOME TO YOU?

I came to Surprise, AZ to be near my mother in 2004.  I joined DSCC in 2005 after a church-search of some months.  The preaching drew me, and the wonderful people have kept me here.  Recently, with my mother now in Glory, I moved to Litchfield Park to be closer to church and my friends here.

WHERE ARE YOU SERVING AT DSCC?

My biggest commitment is Tuesday morning Women’s Bible Study.  I am active in a Life Group, meeting in my home part of the year.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE VERSE & WHY?

Since high school, my favorite verses have been Philippians 4:6-7. “Be careful for nothing but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.  And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, will keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”  Of course I learned the verses in my King James Bible.

MEET THE TABLE LEADER: LINDA BOYD

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:

My name is Linda Boyd. I’ve been married to my husband Bill for 41 years. We have two grown children. Bill and I moved from California to Arizona a year ago.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN AT DESERT SPRINGS & HOW DID IT BECOME HOME TO YOU?

Once Bill and I made our move to Arizona, we settled into church life here at Desert Springs within a couple weeks.

WHERE ARE YOU SERVING AT DSCC?

I am currently serving on the Charis Women’s Coffee Connect Team, formerly titled The Ladies’ Newcomer’s Connection.  Charise Women’s Coffee Connect is designed to help familiarize all women at Desert Springs Church (both new attendees and those who have been attending for a long time) with areas within the church where they may want to get plugged in and involved.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE VERSE & WHY?

My favorite verse in the Bible is 2 Peter 3:9. “The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward us, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.”  It’s the verse that I clung to as I prayed and waited for 35 years for my husband to give his life to Christ. God is faithful and answered that wonderful prayer and my heart is full of praise to the Lord for this blessing.

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:

My husband, Tom, and I grew up together in Kentucky, married & raised our
children there.  We have a daughter, Karen, who is married & still lives in
Kentucky.  She & her husband, Chris, are foster parents to 3 children.  Our
son, Jason, moved to Arizona with us after serving in the Marine Corp and is
currently a student at the University of Arizona in Tucson. We have lived in
several states over the last 20 years as Tom’s work has moved us around, and this is our 2nd time in Arizona.  He currently works with Phoenix Children’s Hospital. I have worked in both medical & law offices in the past, but now enjoy the flexibility of working as a beauty consultant with Mary Kay Cosmetics, which allows more time for family, Bible study & other interests, such as reading, knitting & cross stitch. Tom & I also have a small travel trailer, and we enjoy travel & getting away to the mountains.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN AT DESERT SPRINGS & HOW DID IT BECOME HOME TO YOU?

When we moved to Arizona in 2009, we reconnected with our friends, Buzz &
Marsha Bates.  We had gotten to know them in 1999 when we were in Arizona the first time. They told us about DSCC & invited us to visit.  After visiting a few times that Spring of 2009, we felt that God had a place for us here and we have called DSCC home since then.

WHERE ARE YOU SERVING AT DSCC?

Currently I participate as a greeter once a month on Sunday morning and this
year I am a facilitator for a table of wonderful women in our Tuesday
Morning Bible Study.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE VERSE & WHY?

Two of my favorite Bible verses come from Proverbs 3:5-6.  “Trust in the
Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all
your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths.” It assures me
that I can fully trust God to lead me, but it is also a reminder to acknowledge
Him and His wisdom.  He has led us down many different paths (particularly as we moved to several different states), and these verses have given me comfort to face the unknown, in new places to live and new seasons of life.

MEET THE TABLE LEADER: CARYN DOERKSEN

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:

Hi! My name is Caryn and I grew up as a pastor’s kid and a missionary’s kid. Thankfully my parents’ faith was, and still is, real and very practical. It wasn’t just them doing God’s work, but all of us. Our whole family is called; therefore we all love and serve Him, wherever He takes us. So, I was born in Illinois. I grew up in California, the Philippines, Oregon and England, where I graduated from high school. I went to college at California State University Long Beach where I studied Science and Nursing while my family moved to Egypt. They also lived in Jordan and Israel without me. Fortunately, I was able to visit.

I’ve been a Labor and Delivery Nurse for 20 years now: 9+ years in California, where my oldest daughter Charlotte was born, and 10+ years in Arizona where my youngest daughter was born; both at the hospitals I was working in at the time. In a few months they will be 14 and 11, which leaves me wondering where has the time gone. My husband and I agree that life has more meaning and adventure with them in the world. Being married to Kenny for the last 18 years has been the best.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN AT DESERT SPRINGS & HOW DID IT BECOME HOME TO YOU?

We started attending DSCC 3 1/2 years ago after helping Kenny with his brother’s church plant for 8 years. We are in love with Jesus and all that He is doing in our community and around the world. We are devoted to our church family and we love to serve Him here.

WHERE ARE YOU SERVING AT DSCC?

This September we opened our hearts up to a new adventure when we agreed to assist a refugee family from Eritrea-Ethiopia. We love seeing our girls share their lives by giving, praying, spending time and simply loving these three precious children and their mother. We don’t know the outcome or how long they will be in our lives but we sure are enjoying this time together as a family and seeing God’s hand at work.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE VERSE & WHY?

My favorite Bible verse changes with time and what’s going on in my life. When I was a child I loved Hebrews 13:11 “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” and Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.” When I was in high school it was Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you…” and 2 Corinthians 4:18 ” So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” In college and when I was first married, it was the chapters Galatians 5, Romans 12, Philippians 4, Ephesians 3 – 5; verses on how to live a life pleasing to God. Over the years, God’s Word has blessed and guided me. Right now I am challenged by a simple verse, my new favorite, in 1 John 1:6 “Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.”

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:

I live in Litchfield Park with my img_1362hubs and 3 kids. We have been married 23 years and own our own business. Chandler is 19 and a sophomore in college. Hailey is 13, and Ashley is 12. I’m one of those rare Arizona natives and grew up on the north side of town. I love decorating, shopping and all things Pinterest. But my passion is studying God’s Word.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN AT DESERT SPRINGS & HOW DID IT BECOME HOME TO YOU?

We’ve been attending DSCC for about 11 years. They had just moved into the old building (which had previously been a Catholic church), and the holy water vessel was still in the back of the sanctuary. Things sure have changed since then! We used to attend Palmcroft, and after we moved to Litchfield Park we found out that Pastor Don had moved to Desert Springs to help his son, Steve, out. We figured if he was Don’s son, it must be a good church, and we’ve been here ever since! 🙂

WHERE ARE YOU SERVING AT DSCC?

I serve on the Charis Women’s Team.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE VERSE & WHY?

I have so many favorites, and maybe a few favorites for each season in life. But the one for right now is “For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.” Philippians 1:6. God is so good and so faithful, and that which He starts, He will complete! That gives me such comfort and encouragement, as I rarely ever get to see anything to completion in this season of my life. But the Lord is complete, and all that He begins in us He will complete!

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:

I was blessed to be raised in a Christian home and accepted Jesus Christ as my Savior at the age of 9. I am so thankful the Lord led me to Baptist Bible College in Springfield, MO. It was while I was there that I felt a call to full time ministry. My only stipulation was I didn’t want to go to Africa and I didn’t want to be a pastor’s wife! 🙂 When Don and I met and married, he was in youth work. After 6 years of marriage, God called us to First Baptist Church in Pekin, Illinois, where Don was the Senior Pastor. God knows where He wants to place us to use us for His glory! I am so thankful for the privilege it has been to live my life serving in the church and also international missions work through International Needs. God is so good to allow me to travel with my husband to 55 countries, teaching and encouraging women in their faith.

I have 4 children: Ric, Steve, Shari & Lori. We have 14 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren & another one arriving in April! My desire as I raised my children was that they would love the Lord and serve Him. I feel so blessed to be a mother, grandmother & great grandmother.

I enjoy walking, traveling, my Premier Designs Jewelry business, hospitality in our home and most of all, time with our family!

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN AT DESERT SPRINGS & HOW DID IT BECOME HOME TO YOU?

When Don retired from Palmcroft Church, where we has pastored for 17 years, Desert Springs became our church home.

WHERE ARE YOU SERVING AT DSCC?

Don has served as Mission’s pastor here at DSCC, together we started the ministry called Fourth Quarter, and we host a Life Group. I serve on the Women’s Retreat Team and enjoy leading a Bible study table.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE VERSE & WHY?

My favorite verse, which is my life verse, is Philippians 1:6, “Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

If you see Sharon around, be sure to say “Hi!”
